Want to get away from it all with your hound? Try the Isle of Mull

The Isle of Mull is an island off the west coast of Scotland which offers stunning views and scenery you can enjoy with you four legged friends!

Travelling to the Isle of Mull

The only way to get to Mull is by ferry using the ports at Oban, Lochaline or Kilchoan. We took the small ferry from Kilchoan which only took 25 minutes. The main route from Oban takes 45 minutes and uses a larger ferry. Dogs are welcome as either foot passengers or can stay in the comfort of your vehicle. Although our greyhounds stayed in the car, there were a couple of brave dogs enjoying the rather bumpy ride on the top deck. On the smaller ferry, the stairs to the deck are steep so some dogs may need a hand getting up.  The ferries are run by Caledonian Macbrayne – Ferries to Scotland & Scottish Isles | Caledonian MacBrayne | CalMac Ferries

Things to

There are lots of dog friendly activities on Mull. You can get to most places on the Island in around an hour by car. Although the stunning Duart Castle doesn’t allow dogs inside the castle, tearoom or gift shop, it is still worth a visit as you can walk around the grounds taking in the amazing views across sea to the mainland from the many picnic benches. We even bumped into another greyhound while we were there!

There are many spectacular waterfalls on the island. For a relatively easy walk for people and hounds, we’d recommend Aros Park. Although there is an incline to get to the top of the waterfall, it is steady, with well-maintained paths. If you have an active dog, you can take the nature paths from Tobermorry to the park for a full day of walking.

You can take a drive around the Island and never be short of somewhere to stop to take a scenic walk. Outside of Tobermory, the island’s only town, we didn’t bump into any other dogs while exploring the countryside. It’s perfect if you have nervous or reactive dogs.

There are also some lovely beaches for you and your dogs to enjoy but beware you may end up sharing them with some highland cows or hardy sheep that roam the terrain!

Places to eat

Although the island has a small population, there are still several dog friendly options if you want to eat out. It is always worth checking google for up-to-date information but there are certainly a few places in Tobermory to chose from.

When the weather is nice, there is the award winning fish and chip van on the harbour that you can get your dinner from to enjoy the view of the boats whilst sharing your chips with your hound!

Top Tip

You’re never far away from rain in Mull so make sure you pack your dog a raincoat! We also found The Digby and Fox Towel glove was an essential as they dried really quickly and were ready for when it next rained.

Rain coats and the drying mitts can be purchased on our online shop – Shop | Kent Greyhound Rescue
