Love at First Sight: Finding Your Perfect Rescue Greyhound
If you’ve ever owned a dog or watched a certain TV dog programme, you might believe in love at first sight — that instant “click” when you meet your new best friend. But at Kent Greyhound Rescue, we wish more people understood that this isn’t always how it happens — and that’s completely okay.
Sometimes, the dog who doesn’t instantly give you that spark might actually be your dog — the one who needs a little more time, patience, and love before showing you just how special they are.
We’ve been running Kent Greyhound Rescue for over 15 years, and in that time we’ve seen every type of personality imaginable — from confident and self-assured to nervous, fragile souls who aren’t quite ready to trust humans yet.
Some of our dogs end up being what we affectionately call our “sticky dogs” — those who get overlooked simply because they don’t show their true selves during viewings. They might hang back, seem shy, or avoid interaction. But give them time, love, and patience, and they will reward you tenfold. They become loyal, funny, affectionate companions who will follow you everywhere and bring endless joy into your life.
We’ve seen incredible transformations. Dogs who once wouldn’t let us put a harness on them, or who were too scared to come into the house, now go on holidays, visit pubs, and curl up on the sofa with their families. Yes, they might still find new things scary — but that doesn’t mean they can’t thrive.
All our dogs spend time in foster homes before finding their forever families, but many have spent months — or even their whole lives — in kennels before coming to us. Everyday household items like the TV, the washing machine, or even stairs can be confusing or frightening at first. They need gentle introductions, consistency, and reassurance.
With time, patience, and understanding, these incredible dogs blossom into wonderful companions — ready to share your sofa, your adventures, and your heart.
Right now, some of our greyhounds — like Spooky, Teddy and Harry — are looking for homes. They might be shy or unsure at first, but with love and kindness, they’ll soon show you their beautiful personalities. And we always have a nervous dog or two waiting for that special someone to give them a chance.
So next time you come to meet our dogs, try not to look for that instant spark. Instead, look for the quiet ones, the shy ones, the overlooked ones. Because sometimes, love at first sight takes a little time to grow — but when it does, it’s truly something special.
