Did you know that dogs adopted from Kent Greyhound Rescue can travel and live happily in the EU? With the proper paperwork and a little help from our team, many of our greyhounds and lurchers have found wonderful homes across Europe — just like Misty.
When our lovely adopters travelled to Kent for their holiday, they never imagined they’d be returning home to France with a new four-legged family member. During their trip, they spotted our kennels and decided to visit — and that visit changed everything.
They had lost their beloved bearded collie the previous June, and their galgo hound two years before that. The house had felt too quiet ever since, and they had started to wonder whether it might be time to adopt another dog. And why not a greyhound?
At the kennels, they were welcomed by Leslie, who patiently and kindly explained everything about the adoption process. They were delighted to learn that they could adopt a dog and bring them back to France, as long as the necessary vaccinations were in place — including the rabies jab.
Three weeks later, they returned to Kent to meet their potential companions and to complete Misty’s vaccinations. After walking several dogs to find the best match, it soon became clear that Misty was the one — quiet, kind, affectionate, and not too big for them either!
Karen and the team helped every step of the way. Once Misty was ready to travel, they organised her vet visit near Fawkham for the final health certificate, answered every question, and made sure everything ran smoothly.
Leaving the kennels was emotional. Misty was anxious to leave her friends behind, but she was brave and calm — and soon settled into the car for the journey. After a night in a hotel (where she was beautifully behaved in the restaurant!), she began to relax, especially after an early morning walk.
At Dover, everything went smoothly. There were no issues at customs thanks to her health certificate, and she boarded the P&O ferry without a problem. In the pet lounge, Misty made new friends — one grumpy, one joyous — and even received cuddles from a group of London schoolchildren.
Now safely home in France, Misty is settling beautifully into her new life. She sleeps soundly through the night, enjoys racing around the garden, and already responds to simple commands like come here, stop, and heel.
She’s still a little nervous — loud noises, traffic, and barking can startle her — but she’s improving every day. She loves her routines, her food, her cuddles, and of course, her walks.
Next, she’ll be meeting the grandchildren — another challenge, but one her adopters are sure she’ll manage wonderfully. With time, love, and patience, Misty’s confidence continues to grow.
