LickiMats and More

Why use a Licki Mat? Will a greyhound even know what to do with it? There are so many questions about why you should use one, how to use one and when to use one.  We have specific reference to greyhounds and lurchers, but the advice will be similar for any dogs.

Emotional support for our greyhounds

The most important fact is that a Licki Mat alleviates stress – this is very important with our emotional greyhounds.  Our greyhounds can often get overwhelmed – especially in the early stages of their new pet life.  It may look like a colourful bit of plastic but when some tasty food is added it becomes a repetitive, relaxing activity to take your dogs mind of his worries. In human terms the equivalent would be you doing relaxing yoga, whilst simultaneously eating your favourite chocolates.  You will keep doing the relaxing yoga if you can keep eating the chocs.  The repetition of licking the food crates a more relaxed, less stressful mood for your dog.  This makes him calmer and happier.

The rubber tips of Lickimat gently scrape and stimulate your dog’s tongue whilst feeding or snacking.  This increases saliva protection, improves oral hygiene, protects teeth and gums, and most importantly soothes your dog by releasing endorphins.

The pockets challenge your dog to extract the raw, wet, dry or liquid food or treat as a reward, enriching their feeding experience.  The different surfaces are intended to work with different treats and foots, including frozen!

Tire the brain out, if walking isn’t an option.

It also creates mental stimulation – this is very important to tire your dog out if your dog is injured, on crate rest, if you have a fair-weather dog who won’t walk in the rain, or you have just had a very long day and the dogs walk is shorter than normal.    A licki may can be used along side normal exercise, to help create some mental stimulation and help tire your dog out.

Great distraction for bath time, vet trips or nails

They can provide a much needed distraction during the dreaded bath time – or nail clipping or even a trip to the vets – we even have one that sticks to the side of the bath/shower.

Keep your dog cool.

Why not pop it in the freezer after you have added the food – once frozen it becomes a cooling treat for hot weather.

Which Food Should I Use

You can use whatever your dogs likes – the idea if to use something tasty to encourage him to lick the mat.  If its dense and sticky, it will hold better.

  • Peanut Butter (must not contain xylito)
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Pate
  • Yoghurt
  • Mashed fruit – especially banana or apple – or even massed veg, if your dog like it.

Please remember.

your licki mat is NOT a toy – don’t let dogs play with them and/or chew them.  If your dog is a chewer, please always supervise the activity.

Always be aware of the extra calories, especially if your dog is not walking – for example when you pile on lots of peanut butter!

Selecting the right Lickimat depends on:

  • Type of food
  • Type of treats
  • Is your dog a chewer
  • Do you want to pop it in the dishwasher or handwash

Lickimat Wobble

Lickimat Wobble is a unique bowl with the rubber dimples of the mat surface on the inside!  Wobbles are designed to combine wet, raw and especially soft or liquid dog foods and treats.  Wobbles are extremely well suited to freezing liquid treats and spreads – even freezing different liquids in layers, with or without solid treats added into the mix so that your dog can spend hours working through the treat and finding more surprises.

Wobbles are all about extra for your dog.  The “Wobbling” action adds an extra dimension to the challenge of licking the treat from the rubber dimpled surface, greatly enriching and prolonging the pleasurable experience.

Lickmat Slomo

Lickimat Slomo are deisgned to combine dry, wet, raw and especially soft or liquid dog foods and treats on the same mat, without creating a mess

LickiMat Classics

  • Tuff Buddy
  • XL Buddy
  • Tuff Playdate
  • Tuff Soother

The surface patterns of the three models differ a little to better suit different types of foods, treats and liquids.  All three surfaces are suitable for raw, wet, dry and liquid dog food, as well as any manner of treat.

The Soother is the most challenging of the three surfaces, and is best suited for soft, runny and liquid foods and treats.  It is preferred for liquids such as the juice from BBQ chicken or roasts as it gives the tongue an exquisite workout.

All Lickimat Classics are microwave friendly, so you can cook meals on them in the microwave; they are freezer-friendly, so you can freeze treats on them; and they are easy to hand-wash in the sink.  They are all made from human food-grade rubber (TPR)

Lickimat SloMo mats are designed to combine dry, wet, raw and especially soft or liquid dog foods and treats on the same time without creating a mess.  Like all other Lickimats, they can be used for treats or used as a complete and elegant feeder, especially for small dogs.
