Why use a Licki Mat? Will a greyhound even know what to do with it? There are so many questions about why you should use one, how to use one and when to use one.  We have specific reference to greyhounds and lurchers, but the advice will be similar for any dogs.

Emotional support for our greyhounds

The most important fact is that a Licki Mat alleviates stress – this is very important with our emotional greyhounds.  Our greyhounds can often get overwhelmed – especially in the early stages of their new pet life.  It may look like a colourful bit of plastic but when some tasty food is added it becomes a repetitive, relaxing activity to take your dogs mind of his worries. In human terms the equivalent would be you doing relaxing yoga, whilst simultaneously eating your favourite chocolates.  You will keep doing the relaxing yoga if you can keep eating the chocs.  The repetition of licking the food crates a more relaxed, less stressful mood for your dog.  This makes him calmer and happier.

The rubber tips of Lickimat gently scrape and stimulate your dog’s tongue whilst feeding or snacking.  This increases saliva protection, improves oral hygiene, protects teeth and gums, and most importantly soothes your dog by releasing endorphins.

Why not pop it in the freezer after you have added the food – once frozen it becomes a cooling treat for hot weather.

Which Food Should I Use

You can use whatever your dogs likes – the idea if to use something tasty to encourage him to lick the mat.  If its dense and sticky, it will hold better.

• Peanut Butter (must not contain xylito)
• Cottage Cheese
• Pate
• Yoghurt
• Mashed fruit – especially banana or apple – or even massed veg, if your dog like it.

your licki mat is NOT a toy – don’t let dogs play with them and/or chew them.  If your dog is a chewer, please always supervise the activity.

Always be aware of the extra calories, especially if your dog is not walking – for example when you pile on lots of peanut butter!

The surface patterns of the three models differ a little to better suit different types of foods, treats and liquids.  All three surfaces are suitable for raw, wet, dry and liquid dog food, as well as any manner of treat.
