Lurchers Lurchers Lurchers!

Lurchers Lurchers Lurchers

The lurcher situation is now critical – they are just everywhere and they keep turning up.  More and more every week all unclaimed and unwanted.
Many are “covid” dogs or where they have been bought as puppies as not trained but far too many are from the usual source, where they are no longer needed/wanted so dumped for the taxpayer to sort out via the council stray dog service.  But even dogs who have gone into homes are coming back because people still expect the dog to be perfect and don’t have the patience to train him or set boundaries – or they cannot/will not make adjustments to their life when things change.  (again we are not talking about the genuine reasons)
Since 2016, microchipping is a legal requirement for dogs in the UK and failure to comply may result in penalties of up to £500 – then how come nearly all the lurchers found are not chipped or they are chipped and not registered that just makes a mockery of the law!
Most councils have contracts with the local boarding kennels to house the strays – the massive looming problem is that most kennels are private boarding kennels and in a few weeks time they will need the kennel spaces back for private borders who probably booked a year ago.  This puts the strays at risk because they have to move on but they have nowhere to go.
The council staff really care about their dogs and this is a devastating situation for everyone. But there are literally too many dogs and not enough kennels.
If you are thinking of adopting a lurcher please do it now – either from us or your local centre.  This way not only are you saying his life – you are clearing a space to save another life.  Things are so desperate that delays can put the dogs at risk. We have a list of Lurchers waiting to come in as long as your arm and it is soul destroying as it is endless.
We have some amazing lurchers looking for homes.  But please remember a dog is for life -not until you get bored of him.
