From Neglect to Finding a Forever Home: The Story of Prince the Lurcher

Prince, a seven year-old lucher arrived at Kent Greyhound Rescue in 2019. He came to us from a hoarding situation, terribly thin and desperate for a chance. When he arrived, he couldn’t be near other dogs and generally didn’t cope very well.

And Prince was so very clever, as lurchers often are. After faking a terrible injury in the kennels, Prince went to the emergency vet. Following that excitement, which involved giving a veterinary nurse a very hard time, the volunteers discovered kennels were locked for the night … and so the crafty Prince landed himself in a foster home.

Prince LurcherPrince was a dificult dog that no other rescue would have and, having assessed him, we realised that we was not suitable for rehoming. But we did not give up on Prince.

Despite his really gumpy old man demeanor (he was the worst street collection dog ever!), he continued to live with his foster family for the rest of his life. He felt it was his forever home and nobody told him otherwise.

Sadly, after three years we lost him to a short illness.

KGR is proud to be able to give dogs like this difficult lurcher sanctuary. He felt loved and safe. All he wanted was a lap to cuddle into and lots of affection – and our foster family provided him with just that.

We are proud to have known Prince and have found him his happy place.

We have greyhounds, lurchers and other sighthounds of different ages, sizes and temperament looking for foster homes. If you are interested in fostering, click here to learn more about the  volunteering opportunities we provide.
