Feeding Your Sighthound

Greyhound and sighthound feeding

A question that often gets asked is “What should we feed our Greyhound, Lurcher, Whippet or Sighthound?” It’s a very good question. There isn’t just one answer. All greyhounds are different and unique, just like us!

We only recommend a balanced diet and one that fits your lifestyle and budget. Here are some examples that we hope will help you when deciding how to feed your greyhound.

Let’s start with kibble

Kibble is a complete biscuit food with added vitamins and ingredients that are designed for your greyhound. It is easy to store and easy to feed with just some soaking required. Kibble comes in many different price ranges, so when choosing the right kibble for your greyhound it really is down to you. But remember to check the ingredient list when making your decision.

Did you know some greyhounds have sensitive tummies? If this is your greyhound, you can choose one designed especially for sensitive tummies. There’s lots of choice out there and all made to meet the needs of your greyhound. There’s food for puppies and food for seniors in fact food for all sorts of conditions. Remember to not overthink it as your greyhound just wants to be loved.

Try to go for the most expensive kibble that you can afford. Our  greyhounds at kennels are fed on Arden Grange. There are also many other excellent brands out there including James Wellbeloved, Wainwrights, and Harringtons, to name just a few.

Greyhounds are used to kibble as most are fed that in their racing and rescue kennels.

Raw food diet

Did you know greyhounds can eat raw food? There are companies that will happily deliver to you. You just need some freezer space to store it. Lots of greyhounds thrive on a raw meat diet.

Owners report shiny coats, healthy teeth and good weight control. It’s very much depends on your preference.

Just remember to get the greyhounds food out and defrosted before breakfast and dinner time. We have a local supplier, Romney Raw, where you can purchase all of your greyhounds raw food needs.

Tasty toppers

Greyhounds are used to a bit of variety when it comes to dinner time. You can add some sort of meat to give some extra tasty flavour. Perhaps try different canned dog foods to add to their kibble. Maybe some yummy tinned sardines in oil or tomato sauce once or twice a week. We’ve never known a greyhound turn their nose up at sardines!

As long as your greyhound is holding a healthy weight, have firm poo, enjoy their food and are in good condition you are getting it right.  A clean bowl is what we want to see.
