Summer is fast approaching, and we are all excited for it not to rain so much! Even though we love the heat, our dogs can sometimes struggle with the summer heat.
We have some tips and tricks to keep your pooch cool during the hottest days:
1. Walk them at cooler times: During the summer, the mornings and evenings are the best times to walk your dog. When you choose to walk during this time, it means that their paws won’t get too hot on the pavement.
2. Provide unlimited access to water: Some dogs love water, and some don’t, regardless of this, we recommend providing them with unlimited access to water. This can include paddling pools, water bowls, buckets, and even bird baths.
3. Icy pops: What’s better on a hot day than ice cream? Well, dogs love them as well! We know that as they seem to know the sound of the ice cream van. You can also make them ice pops with their favourite treats or gravy.
4. Damp towels: These are great for cooling your dog’s body temperature. Put the damp towels down on the floor and let them lie on it to cool them down.
5. Non-exercise energy release: Try to keep your dog busy and release energy by creating a treat hunt. Hide treats within your garden and let them use their nose to find them. This will not only occupy their mind but also wear them out.
Remember that not all dogs are the same, and if your dog falls into the following categories, you have to be extra cautious during the heat as this could end up in heatstroke:
• Flat-faced
• Older
• Overweight
• Thick fur
• Current health issues
• Bigger dogs weighing over 50kg
Breeds that are most commonly taken to the vets with heatstroke: Chow Chows, Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Dogue de Bordeaux, Greyhounds, Boxers, English Springer Spaniels, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Pugs, Golden Retrievers, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
Heatstroke signs include:
• Confusion
• Loss of coordination
